To be effective as a coach it is important to understand the required roles, responsibilities, the advantages and disadvantages of different styles of coaching.

It's important to understand the different learning styles of players, why people get involved in sport, what might hinder a player with their development and how to develop effective relationships with everyone involved, including officials around you.

Adopting Good coaching Practices

Coaches should ensure they are providing a safe environment, be aware of current child protection legislations, planning your sessions, be an inclusive coach, managing injuries and injury prevention, all of which makes up Good Coaching Practices.

Coaching Styles

In netball coaching, various coaching styles can be effective depending on the coach's personality and the team's needs. Coaches may need to be more Authoritarian, or a Hands Off Style or more Holistic, or even a combination of various styles.

Planning

Planning your sessions can make the difference between a chaotic practice and a productive, enjoyable learning experience for your players.

Risk Management

The objective of risk management is to produce the safest possible environment for the participants and others. Knowing that the coach has a legal duty to the participants and understanding what this entails will help the coach to minimise the risks.

Player Learning Styles

In netball coaching, players typically have various learning styles that can influence how effectively they grasp and apply new skills. They vary from Visual, Logical, Auditory through to Tactile learners.

Dynamic Warm Up & Recovery

Active and Dynamic warm up is best for every netballer. It's also important that Recovery for every athlete begins before they leave the court.

Who I Am...

Hi, I’m Shirl Fromberg — an Advanced Accredited netball coach with more than 30 years of experience coaching athletes from beginners through to State level.

Netball has been a lifelong passion of mine. Over the years, I’ve been involved in the game as a regional player, umpire, committee member, Academy coach, school sports coach and coach of an Australian touring team, Netball Wanderers.

These experiences have given me a deep understanding of the game from every angle — not just how to coach it, but how to build confident, capable players within a safe and supportive environment.

No matter the age or level, I believe strong foundations are everything. When players learn the basics properly, they develop confidence, game awareness and the skills needed to reach their full potential.

My mission is simple: to help coaches feel prepared, supported and confident — so they can guide their players the right way from the very beginning.
